SUMMARY:2010 Sigma Pi Open
DESCRIPTION:It was another great outing for the players and guests of the 11th anniversary of the Chris Hull Memorial Sigma Pi Open. The air was thick with humidity but our devoted linksters were not deterred. After a catered breakfast in the 19th hole, participants wiped the sweat from their brow and headed to their respective first tees and let it fly! The predicted rain held off all day to allow another fantastic contest for Sigma Pis and Fremont-sters alike. During the round, players were treated to boxed lunches delivered by the fine staff of the Penn State Golf Courses.

After all foursomes had completed their round, players raced to the closest television to see USA and England result in a 1-1 tie in World Cup soccer play. Go USA! Afterward, everyone headed to the Sigma Pi fraternity house for happy hour. There, players were treated to refreshing beer and soda while continuing to enjoy the revelry on the front porch. As the evening began, everyone retired to the Days Inn for the cocktail reception, dinner, and awards ceremony. After dinner, we took time to remember Chris Hull as Ryan Dennis shared a personal story about his friendship with Chris and we were reminded of ‘Chris-mas’ Hull’s fantastic sense of humor in the face of his challenging situation.

As the night wound down, awards were presented for the skills prizes and the tournament winners. With a score of two-under-par, 70, congratulations to Kit Sultz and Steve Spieldenner as the winners of the 11th annual Chris Hull Memorial Sigma Pi Open! We had a three-way tie for second place with 3 twosomes posting a score of 73. After the tie-breaker rule was applied, Jim Briggs and Rick Howell emerged as our runners-up. Good show Jim and Rick! Additionally, with Kit and Steve’s win, the Ohio vs. Pennsylvania trophy was unveiled and presented to Dr. Hull, our patriarch of the Ohio clan. Enjoy that trophy this year, Dr. Hull, and know that Pennsylvania will be looking to take it back in 2011!

On behalf of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Hull, Thompson Harner, and myself, thank you to all players, guests, and sponsors who make the Sigma Pi Open possible. I continue to feel pride in being affiliated with this event as there has been so much generosity. I feel compelled to share with you that the winner of the $500 in this year’s raffle, Gordon Unitas and his wife, Christina, have donated half of their winnings to Fanconi Anemia and half to Sigma Pi, Theta Chapter. Big hackin’ ‘J’, Gordo! With Gordon’s donation, among others, I am pleased to announce that this year’s Open raised over $8,000 for the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund. We look forward to seeing you at the 12th annual Chris Hull Memorial Sigma Pi Open on June 11, 2010.

George 'Hoffie' Hoffmaster
Chairman, Chris Hull Memorial Sigma Pi Open
http://www.golfdigestplanner.com/13999-sigmapiopen/
